The method
How this calculator works
Measure from your eyes to the screen
Sit in the position used most often and measure horizontally to the planned screen surface. Do not measure only to the TV stand if the display will be wall-mounted farther back. For several seats, use the main seat or a distance near the middle of the range.
The calculator converts your viewing distance to inches and divides it by a pair of factors to give a screen-diagonal range. For mixed use, the screen diagonal is between 1/2.1 and 1/1.6 of the distance; for immersive use, between 1/1.6 and 1/1.2. It is deliberately a range because viewing comfort is subjective, and 4K screens can be watched closer than older low-resolution displays without obvious pixel structure.
Choose relaxed or immersive viewing
Everyday mixed use includes broadcast television, news, sport and casual streaming. A slightly smaller picture keeps menus, captions and fast motion comfortable. Cinema use prioritises a wider field of view, so the suggested screen range is larger at the same seat distance.
If your household watches varied content, the common retail size nearest the middle of the mixed-use range is a balanced starting point. Film enthusiasts may prefer the upper end or the immersive range, especially with 4K sources.
Check the actual product dimensions
A 65-inch label describes only the diagonal picture area. Bezels, feet and stands vary, so compare the manufacturer’s full width, height and depth with the furniture or wall. Also check that a soundbar will not block the bottom of the image.
Mark the outer dimensions with painter’s tape and sit down again. This catches awkward relationships with fireplaces, sockets, shelves and windows before delivery day.
Worked example
Example: a 10 ft viewing distance
- Ten feet equals 120 inches from the main viewing position to the screen.
- For mixed use, 120 ÷ 2.1 = 57 and 120 ÷ 1.6 = 75, so the exact range is about 57–75 inches. Rounded to 5-inch steps inside that range, it is 60–75 inches.
- The common retail sizes in that range are 65 and 75 inches. The middle of the range is about 66 inches, so 65 inches is the balanced starting point.
- For an immersive, cinema-style picture, 120 ÷ 1.6 = 75 and 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100, which gives 75–100 inches (75, 85 or 98 inches in the shops).
Practical answer: For mixed use at 10 ft, look at 60–75 inches: 65 inches is the balanced choice and 75 inches suits a bigger, more cinematic picture if the wall and budget allow. Check the physical dimensions of shortlisted models.
Before you buy
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring the alcove width but not the actual viewing distance from the sofa.
- Confusing diagonal screen size with the television’s overall width.
- Ignoring stand width, soundbar clearance, sockets or the wall-mount position.
- Choosing solely from a formula without taping the real outline on the wall.
