The method
How this calculator works
Start with the furniture, not only the floor
A rug normally looks most settled when it relates to the furniture group it anchors. In a living room, that means the sofa and chairs; in a dining room, it means the table plus the space needed to pull chairs back. A bedroom rug needs to create a useful soft landing rather than disappear beneath the bed.
The calculator uses your furniture dimensions where they make the biggest difference. It also checks the room measurements so the suggestion does not leave an awkwardly narrow strip around the edge.
Allow a deliberate border
Most rooms benefit from some visible flooring between the rug and the walls. A border of roughly 20–45 cm often looks intentional, but small rooms can use less. An oversized rug squeezed against skirting boards tends to look like carpet that does not quite fit.
Standard rug sizes vary between retailers, so treat the result as a target rather than an exact product specification. Choose the nearest standard size that preserves the furniture relationship and still works with doors, vents and circulation paths.
Test the footprint before ordering
Use painter’s tape, folded sheets or newspaper to mark the suggested outline. Walk around it, open nearby doors and pull chairs out. This ten-minute check often reveals whether the larger or smaller standard size will work better.
If two sizes both fit, the larger option usually makes a seating group feel more connected. The smaller option can be better where circulation is tight or a feature floor deserves more visibility.
Worked example
Example: a 210 cm sofa in a 4.2 m × 3.4 m room
- Add 50 cm to the 210 cm sofa width (25 cm at each end), giving a rug width of 260 cm.
- Make the length about 1.4 × the width: 260 × 1.4 = 364 cm, which sits under the front sofa legs without blocking circulation.
- Check the room: 340 − 260 leaves 40 cm of floor each side, and 420 − 364 leaves about 28 cm at each end.
Practical answer: The calculator suggests 260 × 364 cm. The nearest common retail sizes are 250 × 350 cm or 240 × 340 cm, so tape those out first and check the front sofa legs sit on the rug.
Before you buy
Common measuring mistakes
- Choosing a rug that only fills the gap between furniture, leaving every chair visually disconnected.
- Measuring the room but forgetting door swings, hearths or routes through the seating area.
- Buying a dining rug that fits the table but not the chairs when they are pulled out.
- Assuming the calculator result must match an exact stocked size instead of choosing the nearest sensible option.
